About my 1999 RSV "Mille", it's history and modifications.
Bought
with funding from FRETTONS of Leamington again, from "Speedaways" an
Aprilia Dealer in Birmingham, this machine had been through a season of British
Superstocks in the hands of the famous "Capt'n" Mark Philips. It bore
the scares of several tumbles and was testament to the struggle he had, trying
to keep up with R1's and Blades etc, resulting in far too many crashes. The
front sprocket looked like it had done the whole season too ! Disgusting mess
really. Also, it had been used for track days by a guy at the shop for a year
before they decided to sell it, so there was plenty of work to be done.
It
came out alright in the end, thanks to a lot of hard work and help from many
sponsors. We had to run the Aprilia race can and Chip, so I sold the Promotive
can and Titanium chip that was fitted to a chap at club level where the rules
are far more relaxed.
The dyno curve I insisted on before it left the shop showed just how poorly it was, look at the rough curve and try to guess what the problem was.
We never knew for sure what was wrong, but the
chain and sprockets cheered it up a bit ! We just changed everything in sight
anyway, filters, plugs, bodywork, brakes, shock and forks were rebuilt etc etc
etc.
Needless to say the motor let us down mid season (See TOP TIP)
and we bought a spare engine complete from a fellow competitor, which turned out
better and more reliable, despite being totally stock, from a crashed road bike
at a breakers !

At the end of the season, because I'd not crashed
it even once, I had a tidy running bike to sell, with plenty of spares. It
helped recoup some of the enormous cost of running this Aprilia Championship.
Where else is brake lever £80 !!!!!!
TOP TIP !
Watch your valve clearances, they close up and that's that, the engine
slows and it's too late ! The collets on the valves are suppose to clench the
valve but they don't, they touch each other first and allow the valves to float
in-between the collets, they smash up and down eventually widening the groove
that the collets are suppose to sit in and your tappet clearances start to
wander. get the collets out and have them skimmed so that they don't meet around
both sides of the valve stem, then they do their job properly and the engine lasts much,
much longer.
